Hillsdale's Most Legendary Setting
Imagined in 1885. Reimagined in 2025.
Paying homage to the city’s railway history, The Keefer House Hotel is Hillsdale’s newest—yet, most legendary—setting. Once frequented by legends like Annie Oakley and “Buffalo Bill” Cody, our halls have been carefully restored to their original 1885 glory with distinct, 21st-century inspiration.

The Glory Days
First opened in 1885, The Keefer House Hotel was a symbol of Hillsdale’s growing prominence following the railway boom of the late 19th century. Locals from nearby and visitors from afar—among them “Buffalo Bill” Cody, Annie Oakley, John Ringling, and, rumor has it, a President on the campaign trail—could enjoy a fine meal in the restaurant, a drink in the saloon, or relax in a traditional guest room.
A Legacy At Stake
In the 1950s, the Keefer House Hotel closed after 75 years of continuous operation, following an economic downturn brought on by decreased train travel. The building was then transitioned into apartments, and its condition slowly deteriorated until it was eventually shuttered in the early 2000s.
New Beginnings
After decades of neglect and discussions of demolition, local leaders and strategic investors decided to give this historic property the chance to be restored to its former glory. Today, this beautiful hotel is once again welcoming visitors and locals alike to enjoy a relaxed stay and a great meal. The Keefer opened in time to celebrate its 140th anniversary, ready to welcome the 140—and more—to come.
Revitalizing the
Keefer House Hotel
The transformation of the Keefer Hotel from a vacant, decaying structure into a vibrant landmark is a testament to the power of collaboration. Selected not only for its historic significance but also for its potential to catalyze economic and social renewal, the Keefer House Hotel stands as a symbol of Hillsdale’s resurgence.
This remarkable renaissance was made possible through the dedicated efforts of key community partners, including The City of Hillsdale and Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA), Hillsdale College, the The Heritage Association, The Dawn Theater, and numerous passionate individuals. Their vision, support, and investment played an essential role in restoring the Keefer Hotel to its former grandeur, ensuring it once again serves as a beacon of hospitality, culture, and community pride.
